17 - Action

[Despite the irritation in his last entry, the local vigilante has taken it upon himself to try out the damn rifle anyway. It might not work as he wants it to, but he'll take potshots over losing his edge.]

[Which is why he's standing at the edge of the green, taking careful aim, and firing into one of the topiary shrubs. He's aiming for the central trunk, to avoid grazing the thing and hitting someone walking along behind it.]

[... between the sharp cracks of rifle fire, his head bobs in a rhythm. Almost like...]

[Okay, yes. Garrus has his music on.]

[And if you watch him long enough, he might even attempt some semblance of dancing.]

Unless... they're not really gone. Not like they say, anyway.

Why would anyone lie about that?

Keeps us in line. If we think we don't have anywhere to go back to... why try and leave?

But why would they want to keep us here?

[This is all far more complicated than what he's used to.]

I don't know. Haven't managed to figure that one out yet.

If Rucks was here I'm sure he could figure it out.

[Kid isn't smart, or at least doesn't think of himself as smart. He can work, he can scout, and he can fight but he's no good at plans or anything like that.]

Rucks? Who's that?

[Shepard probably could too. But running to her for every little problem isn't an option.]

Guess you're right. Wouldn't be a bad thing to have someone like that around.

[He hefts the rifle, looking down at it.]

M-97 Viper. A sniper rifle. Good for long-range shooting.

Mine was a standard army carbine

[If it has a fancy name like his Kid doesn't now it.]

It's not as fancy looking though.

Long as it works, doesn't matter if it's standard or not.

[He looks down at his own.]

Wouldn't call it "fancy".

[Kid studies his gun.]

Looks fancy to me.

[Even so he can see several similarities between his and this one.]

Maybe where you're from it is, then. But back home... it's not much.

Now the Widow... there's a rifle.

[Kid shifts his gaze towards Garrus.]

Well, it's like you said right? As long as it works?

[He looks back towards the rifle.]

It looks like a good gun to me.

[He chuckles lightly.]

Yeah. As long as it works.

Do you use it a lot?

Back home, yeah. I did. Here... there's not much call for a rifle that won't take the target down.

It doesn't work anymore?

Not really. It'll fire, sure. Everything about the firing mechanisms, the sighting... it's all normal.

But it suddenly fires nonlethal rounds. Exclusively.

[Kid looks at his rifle for a moment before drawing one of his slinger pistols. He opens the chamber, pouring the bullets into his hand. They're all rubber.]

Those weren't like that before.

Is that... rubber?

[He takes a step nearer, peering down at the projectiles.]

It looks like it.

[He loads the bullets back into his pistol and holsters it in his belt. It looks like he won't be killing anyone with these, which is fine with him seeing how he prefers not to kill anyone at all.]

So they don't want us shooting each other. Huh.

But there's plenty of other weapons to go around.
