I probably should start doing this more regularly, but... you start to wonder sometimes. What's the point of keeping your weapons in shape if they don't even work like they should?

I've tried every trick in the damn book, and I can't get this thing to fire lethal rounds.

[A pause, a quiet, frustrated noise, and talons on metal.]

Considering it's a rifle, and I never loaded it with practice rounds? That's not good. I know this gun.

[He falls silent again. It's not just the rifle that's gotten his metaphorical boxers in a knot, even if he won't say so.]

[Tali has been silent for way too long.]

... this shouldn't be happening.

I know what you mean. At least in your case, it's just a gun.

It's like they don't want us to be able to kill each other.

... I am rather sure someone explained to me a while ago that abilities, and, as an extension of this, weapons, would be curtailed. Despite the fact that it's perfectly possible to severely injure others with or without weapons, apparently the chances of using a weapon to do so if someone is so inclined isn't supposed to either be easy, or possible.

[There's a brief pause as Jetfire actually considers this.]

I should probably examine what my own rifle can still do and if it's been changed in any way.

Clearly not. Apparently we should trust the defenses of the Keep, even when those fail, and then have to work with substandard defenses that might not be up to adequately neutralizing any given threat.

[Completely unaware of Garrus' offense at the implication normal weapons are on the same level as... less than logical... "powers", Jetfire just vents a sigh, vocalizer briefly fuzzing out.]

My rifle isn't loaded with physical bullets, but photon plasma charges... I assume that either I'll not be able to slide the charge up to full, or it will simply not register... Hmn. I'll see in a few minutes.

[There's the distinct, if muffled, noise of metal on stone as Jetfire leaves where he'd been sitting for the outside.]

Since you would obviously have fired your rifle somewhere... is there any place that is sufficiently secure, regardless of weapon lethality?

[HEY ELLIS KNOWS THAT VOICE

Do you know what else he knows? That pain.]

My gun ain't workin', neither. It shoots paint now, and that kinda hurts, but that ain't gonna take nobody down.

[That's... special.]

Oh, I know we can. Some of us still have weapons that can kill, but there are plenty of ways to kill people without conventional weapons.

Well, I don't like strange lords messing with my genetics, either.

I think we'd all be missing important limbs if they wanted to keep us from being able to kill.

Where I'm from, there's a mutant gene that gives us our powers.

Possibly. What are they like?
angleofscience: (pacifist scientist - got weapons anyway)

[personal profile] angleofscience 2012-03-12 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
The point, yes. One would think that if it was so very usual for things to come from within presumably safe perimeters, we would get to keep our weapons at full capacity.

I see... Might not need to go that far...

[It hasn't taken him long to get to the edge of the green, but when putting down the journal to test his rifle, Jetfire manages to make a gesture enough to switch over to video. The angle is bad, and most of what Garrus gets to see is a metal arm and hand putting the journal down, and then an angled view of a white and red (metal, too) leg for a few moments accompanied by the whomping whine of several shots fired from... presumably... the rifle.

Then Jetfire comes back, frowning thoughtfully as he picks up the journal, noting he's managed to switch it to video and ignoring it. Doesn't matter, right?]

Hmm... it seems it simply refuses to recognize that I've dialed up the strength of the charge; it stays on stun.

It sounds similar, but the mutant gene manifests in a lot of different ways. There are mutants who can read minds, control the weather, and teleport. Some mutant powers just change their biology in ways they can't control, like accelerated healing, enhanced strength and senses.

[Seriously. How does it even make sense?]

It is pretty incredible. Of course, that means there are people who want to control mutants because they can be dangerous. Do people with biotics have problems like that in your world?

[More than one species, huh? Interesting.]

Let me guess - you have a few bad examples of people misusing their powers, and then everyone with biotics is a living weapon.

Maybe you're just lacking in firepower.
